2016 Cheese & Cheers AwardJim Cornette uses his land in Suamico to provide opportunities for people to enjoy nature, regardless of age or ability. He started sharing his scenic property with groups from Syble Hopp School 15 years ago and through the years he has entertained guests from Paragon, Aspiro, Syble Hopp, and Camp Pop. He has made the outside world accessible to all by providing many wheelchair and handicap-friendly amenities. He maintains two ponds on his property; one is for swimming and the other is for fishing, stocked by Jim himself. Mr. Cornette designed a chute that allows visitors to watch their fish go back into the water after they are caught and released. There are several beautiful trails through the woods for hiking and wagon rides. He built a large ramp to allow people in wheelchairs to board the wagon for a ride around the property.
Jim constructed a large outdoor restroom facility after realizing the difficulties that some guests have using the bathroom. He is constantly innovating, and thinking of ways to make visits to his land more enjoyable for all. Mr. Cornette is a very humble man, and will be the first to tell you about all the help he has had in making this experience possible. Family and friends help out with many projects, and are often there to lend a hand during group visits. His Labradoodle and constant companion, Willy, is a friend to all. In addition to welcoming people who come to fish, swim, and hike, Willy often accompanies Jim to nursing homes to visit residents. It is with great honor that I announce Mr. James Cornette as the recipient of our 2016 Cheese & Cheers Award. I have no doubt that Jordan would be very pleased with our selection :) |
